Infant Feeding, Lactation & Oral Motor Therapy

Therapy for the infant feeders

Infants sometime struggle with bottle and breastfeeding due to oral motor issues along with tethered oral tissues.  I provide therapy based on different techniques to assess and address oral motor issues that cause feeding difficulties in the newborn through solid-food eater; as a Certified Lactation Counselor, I can assess the mom and baby dyad to determine the root of breastfeeding issues as well. These infants who are struggling with eating are assessed to determine the root cause of the feeding issue; therapy is then begun to help the child have a successful feeding experience.  If your baby is struggling with eating at the breast or bottle, contact me for an evaluation!

Oral Myofunctional Therapy

Therapy for Oromyofunctional DIsorders

Orofacial myology is the "study and treatment of oral and facial muscles as they relate to speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health." (Sandra Holtzman, CCC-SLP, QOM).  Myofunctional therapy is like "physical therapy for your face." It is used to strengthen and reeducate orofacial muscles, as well as correct atypical swallowing, chewing and breathing.  It can be used in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to prevent relapse after the treatment is completed.  This type of therapy is also used to eliminate oral habits including thumb sucking and eliminating the pacifier.  Contact me if you have concerns with possible oral myofunctional disorders.  (Now accepting patients five and older for myofunctional therapy through Irby Psychological Services.)

Speech Sound Disorders

Therapy for speech sound disorders

Many children are in speech therapy for speech sound problems for many years with little progress.  Using a variety of therapy methods as well as assessing the oral structure and function of that structure,  I try to get to the root of the issue to determine the best therapy method to help correct these errors.  If your child is having difficulty correcting sounds that have been addressed for a long time in therapy, please give me a call for an assessment and therapy plan.
